Apartamento Moçambique

existente&proposto-02.jpg

Tactical refurbishment of a 1930’s apartment located in Lisbon’s iconic Art Deco neighbourhood, Bairro das Ex-Colónias.

With minimal intervention, we adapted the fragmented interior spaces into an open-plan residential space with a fluid connection between the individual and social areas. From engineered marble terrazzo, to azulejos, the choice of materials throughout the apartment are an ode to Portuguese craft.

The original red pine floors as well as all other existing carpentry—skirt boards, doors, windows—were restored. New materials were introduced to complement the existing features: terrazzo tiles in an offset layout pave the the marquise and bathrooms, white azulejo tiles line the bathroom walls, while Estremoz white marble provides cooking and eating surfaces in the open plan living room.

We designed a minimalist oak-veneer panel kitchen and left shelves exposed to emphasise the clients’ Portuguese crockery. The traditional Lisbon dark green colour was restored from the original design, and brought back as new elements. New built-in storage was designed with oak elements contrasting with the white surroundings.

Adjacent to the heart of the home, the marquise in envisioned as a winter garden—with vegetation lending the space a purifying quality.
